BAM! Maggie's in Love
(NY Daily News, TV Vue - June 13, 2004)
Maggie finally admits her feelings to Bianca this week on All My Children.
"They're in Maggie's new apartment that she shares with Jamie," says Elizabeth Hendrickson, who plays Maggie. "Maggie and Jamie invite Babe and Bianca back to their apartment to have some fun and help them loosen up. They play a game called 'I Never' and they're all drinking. One of the 'I Nevers' is 'I never lied to my best friend' and they all take a swig of beer except Bianca, because, of course, Bianca has never lied to anyone."
When Maggie chugs, Bianca knows she must have fibbed to her about something, so she asks what it was. "At first, Maggie hesitates, but then she decides it's now or never," says Hendrickson. But before Maggie can 'fess up, "the party is interrupted by David Hayward, who says there's a problem with Bess."
Jamie and Babe leave, and Maggie then tells Bianca that despite all the times she has insisted she is straight, she has indeed fallen in love with Bianca. "Bianca is shocked," continues the actress. "She didn't see this coming at all, and she doesn't know how to respond. That reaction spins Maggie into a very awkward state, because she doesn't want to say too much, and she doesn't want Bianca to think she is giving her an ultimatum: 'Do you like me or do you not like me?' Bianca tries to help her understand her feelings, and be as natural and calm about the whole situation as possible. But Maggie doesn't get the reaction she was hoping to get, which would be, 'I love you, too.'"
That's okay. AMC fans have been waiting a long time for Maggie to admit her feelings, and just because Bianca is still in love with Lena and doesn't reciprocate them right now doesn't mean that she won't. "I think ABC knows that the fans are ready for it and have wanted it for almost 2 and a half years now," says Hendrickson of the many Bianca and Maggie fans who have nicknamed themselves BAM.
"I was surprised when I got the script because I did not expect it at all. But I was happy with the way they explained it, and very proud of the way the scenes were written." So now Maggie, who has only dated men, is in love with her best friend, and the love story is as confusing as any straight romance on soaps. "Ain't that the truth!" chortles Handrickson.
