'Love' At First Sight
(Soap Opera Weekly - April 1, 2003)

Elizabeth Hendrickson (Maggie) says there is more than chemistry between her and AMC co-star Ivan Shaw (Henry) - fate brought them together.

"The night before I tested [with him], I was coming back from L.A. and I knew I was testing with someone Asian," she recalls. "I'm sitting outside of the airport, and this cute guy walks by, and he's Asian. I looked at my friend and said, 'Oh, I'll take him - he's cute'. The next morning I get to testing and there are four guys, and Ivan was one of them. I ran up to him and said, 'You don't understand - you were meant to be! You're the cute boy I saw yesterday - you have to get it.'"

Shaw was a bit shaken by her declaration. "Honestly, I think I threw him," admits Hendrickson. "I looked at my hairdresser and said, 'He might think I'm crazy.' He's a warm and open person, and we clicked automatically. I wanted him to get the job, so I was telling him what to expect from the audition."

Hendrickson's prepping worked: Shaw won the role, and Henry and Maggie's romance has taken off. "I love this interracial relationship," Hendrickson raves. "There's a lot of conflict involved. I can relate to this; I dated someone who was not of a different race but of a different religion, and his family never knew about me for a year and a half."

The actress is thrilled with the young couple's romance for another reason. "It's so great that now I have a story, rather than being the girl in the background," she says with a laugh. "I was sort of asexual for a while."
